Production of accordion mechanical assemblies

Every detail reveals the level of expertise and manual skill achieved by entrepreneurs based in the Marches region – particularly in Castelfidardo – in manufacturing accordion mechanical assemblies:the mechanics must be especially careful when assembling even the smallest component, so as to prevent any potential complications.
The production of mechanical assemblies for standard GSB accordions involves constructing accordion bodies including a number of holes corresponding to the main notes, bearing in mind that the deeper notes require a greater amount of air and thus larger holes.

According to the GSB procedure, the initial processing phase of handcrafted parts made with natural materials involves gluing wooden supports to the sides of the body, which sustain the mechanical components – particularly the pistons, rods and levers (“catorcetti”) – as manufacturing progresses.
Two additional wooden pieces that act as guides for the valves and springs are glued to the front and rear end of the body, while the right-hand side is fitted with a lever linked to a small piston for bleeding air.
The next phase in the GSB accordion mechanical assembly production consists in positioning the levers (“catorcetti”) and fixing the pre-drilled bass board.Subsequently, the rods are connected to the pistons, pins and rubber tips inside, then the wooden guides, bass buttons and chord buttons are assembled.

For accordions equipped with international-type mechanical assemblies manufactured by GSB, the most appropriate bass board is smooth and inclined, with pistons of various colours –from white to black to ivory, pearl white and pearl black – while for French-style accordion mechanical assemblies, the bass board is stepped and the buttons on the pistons are of the same colour as those used on international-type mechanical assemblies.
